  ADMISSION & ELIGIBILITY

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications for the 2006 COSMOS Program will be available January 16, 2006 and will be due March 16, 2006. If you are interested in being added to our mailing list for summer 2006, please send us an email with your name, mailing address, and email to cosmos@ucdavis.edu.

TUITION
Tuition for the 2006 COSMOS Program is $2,000. Out-of-state students are required to pay the full tuition of $6,200. Tuition includes room and board, classroom materials, academic field trips, and transportation while on campus.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Fee waivers are available for California residents demonstrating financial need. No qualified student will be denied admission for lack of financial resources. In 2005, approximately 20% of the students who attended the program received full financial aid.

RETURNING STUDENT POLICY
May I attend COSMOS more than once? Yes, however our goal is to offer the COSMOS experience to as many talented students as possible. First time applicants will be given priority. Previous attendees, program alumni, may be placed on a waiting list. COSMOS alumni must apply to a different campus and will be enrolled on a space available basis. Students are limited to two COSMOS experiences.

ELIGIBILITY
Students are selected to attend COSMOS by the faculty of each cluster. There are no explicit standards that must be met to be accepted to the program. Rather, the faculty look at the entire application and weigh it against others who have applied to the same cluster. The following criteria are considered:

 •
Timeliness - Applications must be post-marked by March 16th.

 •
Pre-requisites - Some clusters have pre-requisites. These will be considered first. If
an applicant does not meet the pre-requisites, the application will be forwarded to his/her next cluster choice.

 •
Grades - Success in high-level math and

science courses is strongly considered. Overall GPA is also considered, but not as important as math and science grades. Honors courses and courses taken beyond the normal track are considered when reviewing grades.

 •
Essay Responses - Faculty will read each
essay thoroughly. They are very interested in
learning about the applicant's motivation for attending and what the applicant hopes to gain from the COSMOS experience.

•
Teacher Recommendations - As teachers have a busy schedule, it is important to give
them the forms early in the process. Follow up with the teacher is encouraged to ensure
that the recommendation has been submitted. It may be helpful to provide them with a pre-addressed, stamped envelope. Teacher recommendations may also be emailed directly to the appropriate campus.

•
Test Scores - Performance on standardized
test scores, such as the STAR test, is considered.

•
Student Activities - Extra curricular activities
surrounding math and science (such as competition in science fairs and/or other math/science programs) are considered but not required for admission.
