Los Alamos National Laboratory Field Trip
Back by popular demand, COSMOS Cluster 2, Physics of Electro-optics and Nuclear Technology, will take a 3-day field trip to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Northern New Mexico. COSMOS students will be granted access not usually granted to the average visitor. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
What and where is Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)? Located in Northern New Mexico, the LANL was founded to undertake the Manhattan Project during World War II. What was the Manhattan Project you might ask? This project was established to develop the first nuclear weapon out of fear that the Nazi's were developing nuclear weapons of their own. The weapon later came to be known as the Atomic Bomb. COSMOS students will be granted access not usually granted to the average visitor. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Co-organized by UC Davis COSMOS Cluster 2, the Materials Design Institute (LANL), and Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANL) this field trip is meant to illustrate "big science and technology" as well as one of the most important scientific institutions that has changed the course of history through its scientific and technological contributions.
A few places we plan to visit
Security Clearance Information
Since the Los Alamos National Lab is a highly secured facility, each participant will be required to go through a "clearance" process. Additional information about the "clearance" process will be available once you have been admitted to the cluster.
If a student does not pass the "clearance" process, the cluster will do its best to plan an alternate activity in Los Alamos for these students.
Funding for the COSMOS Cluster-II field trip to Los Alamos, New Mexico is provided by the US Department of Energy program Nuclear Energy Research, Development and Demonstration under the Nuclear Energy Research Initiative through contact number DE-FG07-07ID14893.
